Medical specialty drug resources
In support of our mission to provide access to quality, affordable care for our members, Blue Shield has adopted solutions that partner with our providers to meet our member’s health care needs. The following resources are applicable for drugs covered under the medical benefit, including injectables and office-administered medications.
Medication drop ship program
California providers can order select medications via Blue Shield’s Medication Drop Ship Program. This is a voluntary program for commercial PPO network participants to use in filling medication orders for commercial PPO plan members, as an alternative to the traditional buy-and-bill model. Under this program, the physician’s office may order medications from a network Blue Shield specialty pharmacy on an individual patient basis. The pharmacy will deliver the medication to the physician’s office and bill Blue Shield directly for the cost of the medication. After the member receives treatment, the physician may bill Blue Shield for only the administration costs.
