Peter Long, PhD
Peter Long, PhD, is chief strategy officer and executive vice president for health solutions at Blue Shield of California, a nonprofit health plan with over $24 billion in annual revenue, serving over 4.8 million members in the state's commercial, individual, and government markets. Dr. Long leads collaborations with healthcare providers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to design innovative clinical and community programs, healthcare delivery, and payment systems that provide all Californians access to value-based, high-quality, and affordable care.
Previously, Dr. Long was president and chief executive officer of Blue Shield of California Foundation, where he focused on building lasting and equitable solutions to make California the healthiest state and to end domestic violence.
His broad career background includes extensive experience working on health policy issues at the state and national levels and has written numerous papers and chapters on a variety of health policy topics. His research and 20+ publications have been groundbreaking in healthcare reform and community development. Dr. Long has lent his expertise and insights as a co-author to many reports, including National Academy of Medicine papers on Digital Health, Recommendations for Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services, and Strategies to Improve Population Health in the United States.
Dr. Long has been a member of several boards, which has recently included California Quality Collaborative, California Association of Health Plans, Manifest Medex, PriMed (Hill Physicians Managed Services Organization), Learning Health Systems group, Primary Care Collaborative Board, and California Association of Health Plans. Dr. Long has also participated in advisory committees, consortiums, and councils for National Academy of Science and Medicine, Peterson Health Technology Institute, Integrated Healthcare Association, Loma Linda Public Health Institute, and American Heart Association.
Dr. Long earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Fielding School of Public Health – where he is also an adjunct faculty member.
