Prescription drugs are one of the most common forms of medical treatment. Knowing how to utilize the prescription drug benefits of your plan can save you time and money.

  • Use the Drug Formulary: Your health plan uses a drug formulary, which is a list of drugs your plan covers. Drugs are categorized in different levels based on their cost. Generic drugs are typically 30% to 80% less expensive than brand-name drugs, so if there is a generic version of a brand-name drug, ask your doctor if prescribing the generic version will work for you. Using generic drugs, when appropriate for your condition, is one of the easiest ways to reduce your prescription drug costs. Some drugs may require pre-approval by Blue Shield. Consult the Standard Drug Formulary for details.

  • Find a Network Pharmacy: Your doctor will send the prescription to the local pharmacy of your choice. Before you choose a pharmacy, use Find a Provider to locate network pharmacies near you.

  • Get a 90-Day Supply: For most prescription drugs you take on an ongoing basis, we offer you the convenience of receiving a 90-day supply of your drugs through the mail, at no additional cost. Visit the Pharmacy Mail Service for details.
